The shell looks brownish black but when removed from its shell, it is light green in colour with black circle like stuff which is usually called the ‘ear’.
To use unshelled periwinkle in your soup, the ‘ear’ should be removed so that it does not stick to your gum and make you feel uncomfortable while eating.
To use shelled periwinkle, it must be properly washed. Here are tips to help you achieve this.
- · Pour periwinkle into a plastic bowl and wash in circular motion under running tap.
- Do this as many times as possible to reduce dirt’s and sediments.
- · Then wash a handful at a time and put into another bowl.
- · Pour enough water to cover the periwinkles and add a good amount of salt.
- Leave for about 10- 15 minutes
- · You would notice some dirt’s floating on the surface
- · Then your shelled periwinkle is ready to be used.
Note: If you feel this is a long process, you could wash the periwinkle under running water properly. in a circular motion. Then, put in a pot and boil for about 10 minutes, drain water. and use for whatever dishes you want.
